The "2008 Kernel Changes" presentation gives an overview of the changes and improvements in the Windows Server 2008 kernel. These changes include the dynamic partitioning and virtualization (Hyper-V) platform support functions, as well as the time accounting and cycle time counter functionality in the processes and threads. Windows Server 2008 includes self-healing NTFS and SMB2, in which operations can be batched to minimize client/server round trips. Other enhancements to the Windows Server 2008 kernel include I/O completion port improvements, new I/O prioritization, dynamic system address space, and an improved memory manager with NUMA enhancements. Windows Server 2008 also now allows the creation of parallel sessions, and services can request pre-shutdown notification. Finally, Windows Server 2008 includes improvements in reliability and recovery (such as a Kernel Transaction Manager [KTM] and improved handling of process crashes) as well as security.
